For Arvada West, the Class 5A championship was a reminder that a single touchdown can decide everything.

The Wildcats fell 7-0 to Legend at Trailblazer Stadium in Lakewood, ending a remarkable run just short of a state title.

For families following high school flag football in Arvada, the result stung because the game remained within reach.

Arvada West repeatedly pushed into scoring territory, but Legend’s defense turned promising possessions into painful missed chances.

Noelle Ho collected two interceptions, while Tatum Burke and Reagan Steuber added one each for Legend.

Steuber’s late takeaway came after quarterback Emerson Drake connected with Grace Schillie on fourth down, giving Arvada West another opening.

Instead, the interception helped seal the shutout and earned Steuber the game’s outstanding player honor.

Legend’s only touchdown arrived in the first quarter on a pass from Addyson Law, and the Titans protected that slender lead the rest of the way.

Another deep attempt near the goal line ended in Ho’s hands, underscoring how little room Arvada West had for error.

Jocelyn Ayriss supplied an interception for the Wildcats, whose defense did enough to keep the championship tense until the finish.

Coach Deven DelReal pointed to missed assignments and squandered opportunities afterward, a frustration familiar to any team that comes close without scoring.

The loss left Arvada West at 17-2, a record that reflects much more than one difficult afternoon.

For the Wildcats, the heartbreak is real, but so is the standard they set for girls flag football in their community.

Legend’s victory capped a climb from the quarterfinals in the sport’s pilot season to the semifinals in 2024 and a runner-up finish last season.

Now the Titans have their first state title, while Arvada West has every reason to take pride in its Class 5A flag football run.
