Jeffco Public Schools Celebrates Arrival of Six New Electric School Buses, a step toward quieter student transportation and cleaner air along the roads its buses travel.

The district marked the arrival of the buses and six bidirectional chargers with staff, community leaders and project partners before closing the celebration with a ribbon cutting.

For families waiting at bus stops, the appeal is easy to picture: a school bus pulling up without the familiar diesel rumble.

For the district, the project also brings a new question into focus: what can a bus contribute when its route is done?

Jeffco Public Schools Celebrates Arrival of Six New Electric School Buses: How the chargers work

A partnership among Jeffco Public Schools, Xcel Energy and Highland Electric Fleets helped bring the electric school buses to Jeffco.

Xcel Energy is providing approximately $3.4 million through its Electric School Bus Program to help pay for the vehicles, bidirectional charging infrastructure and systems that manage charging.

Unlike a conventional charger, a bidirectional charger can move electricity in two directions.

That means electricity stored in a parked bus battery can potentially flow back to the electrical grid when needed.

The buses are not just vehicles to charge overnight; they can also serve as energy resources while parked.

That capability does not mean every parked bus will always send power back, but it gives the partnership an option beyond routine charging.

Golden neighborhoods and quieter school bus rides

Golden Mayor Laura Weinberg pointed to the places school buses pass each day, including homes, parks and trails where people walk and bike.

Her point reaches beyond students on board: neighbors and families at stops may also notice a quieter arrival.

Electric buses also avoid tailpipe emissions during their trips, a meaningful distinction where children gather to board.

For a parent standing beside a busy road, that is a more immediate benefit than a technical specification.

The district has not identified which routes will receive the new buses, so residents should not assume a particular stop will see one right away.

Jeffco bus drivers prepare for the transition

Getting the vehicles ready for service involves more than plugging them in.

Drivers and trainers are receiving classroom and hands-on instruction covering differences in starting, operating and charging the buses.

Mechanics, transportation employees and facilities staff also helped move the project from planning through installation.

Jeffco transportation leader Nathan Reimer described the six buses as a breakthrough after the district faced doubts about whether it could obtain electric buses at all.

He hopes this first group can open the door to more, though no additional purchase was announced at the celebration.

District operations chief Jeff Gatlin framed the investment around students, staff and the communities they share.

Six buses will not transform the entire Jeffco fleet overnight.

But each trip will give the district practical experience with electric school bus transportation, while giving riders and neighbors a chance to experience the difference firsthand.
